Allergies

imageAllergies affect almost 50 million people in the United States. To put it simply, allergies are the body’s response to substances in the environment. To some people these substances (known as allergens) are harmless, but to others they cause the body to have what is known as an allergic reaction. The most common allergens are pollen, mold, dust mites, certain foods, latex, animal dander and insect stings. Symptoms of an allergic reaction are usually mild and include a rash, hives, itchy eyes, and congestion. Certain people can have a severe allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis can cause decreased blood pressure, shock, loss of consciousness, or even death. It is a life-threatening event that requires immediate treatment.  To get answers to all your diabetes questions, visit our list of Recommended Sites.

Allergies can’t be prevented, but they can be treated. Making changes in your environment can limit your exposure to the allergens that affect you. PhillyHealthInfo.org is here to help you get answers to your questions and find health services in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, or Philadelphia County. Our resource list in the blue box on the right side of the page is a good place to start.
